Return to New Innocents

At certain periods it becomes the dearest ambition of a man to keep a faithful record of his performances in a book; and he dashes at this work with an enthusiasm that imposes on him the notion that keeping a journal is the veriest pastime in the world, and the pleasantest. But if he only lives twenty-one days, he will find out that only those rare natures that are made up of pluck, endurance, devotion to duty for duty’s sake, and invincible determination, may he hope to venture upon so tremendous an enterprise as the keeping of a journal and not sustain a shameful defeat.

We didn’t forget you! Cheers to hoping that you haven’t forgotten us.

At the expense of our frequent updates to New Innocents, my day job has become the happiest of all-consuming endeavors. A few short weeks ago, I assumed command of USS SCOUT (MCM 8), one of our nation’s mighty warships.

As you might imagine, the scope of responsibility is significant, and to be plain, we didn’t think we could simultaneously manage my early days as ship’s captain and write about our family’s American Wilderness adventure. We prioritized accordingly and hope you’ll cut us some slack.

But now, on this Monday after Veteran’s Day, and in the wake of our most unusual election season, we return to the conversation.

We will sprinkle the occasional weekday article, but our focus is now on sharing what we’ve learned in our recent adventures through our Trip Reports. Published every Monday in the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the best of our lessons learned. A short list of what’s on the horizon:

Pinnacles National Park

Sequoia National Park, The Foothills

Sequoia National Park, The Giant Forest

King’s Canyon National Park

Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Valley

Yosemite National Park, Tuolumne Meadows

Yosemite National Park, Glacier Point

Yosemite National Park, Hetch Hetchy Reservoir

Perhaps now more than ever, this conversation must be had…

How can we help?

How can we help you to find your way to this America we keep talking about. An America where brown folks, and bison, and muslims, and buddhists, and white folks, and jews, and deer, and gay people, and christians, and bald eagles, and transgender people, all stand in rapturous wonder.

An America united.

Come on out of your bubbles and echo chambers…The air is fine.

We begin our adventure anew.

Let’s go Find Your Park. When the trail dust settles, perhaps we’ll find we’ve returned New Innocents.
